Are you interested in following Jesus?
Depending on who you ask, where they go to church and what they believe, you will get a plethora of different answers to this seemingly simple question. All will have similarities, but they will have many differences too. Rather than go to any number of secondary sources for a conflicted answer, let's go directly to the words of Jesus to seek an answer to this most important of questions.
Then He said to them all, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it. For what profit is it a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost? For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, of him the Son of Man will be ashemed when He comes in His own glory, and in His Father's, and of the holy angels" (Luke 8:23-26, NKJV).
In three apparently simple steps, Jesus sets forth the prerequesities to and cost of becoming His disciple. He tells us, in the most basic of terms, what is required to be a Christian, which is what His original disciples came to be called (Acts 11:26). He states, without apology, the real cost and actual committment involved with coming after Him. I would encourage you to stop here and read it again. Read it carefully. Read it prayerfully. Read it out loud. Read it until you clearly see the degree of commitment involved with being His disciple.
