Daily devotionals that will challenge you to grow as a disciple of Jesus Christ

“Jesus answered them and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.”” (John 6:26–27, NKJV)

What can Jesus do for you? How can He serve you? What can He give you?

As you take a moment for an honest evaluation of your motives, are you sure you are not seeking Jesus for reasons that have nothing to do with everlasting life? In other words, are you following Jesus for the proverbial ‘loaves and fishes,’ whatever your ‘loaves and fishes’ might be? Those who follow Jesus for the earthly blessings tend to cease following, or follow at a distance, when the earthly blessings cease and all that remains are the spiritual blessings and trials of being a disciple.

Jesus reminds His disciples to not only labor for the food which perishes, but more importantly for the food which endures to everlasting life. He never promised earthly blessings such as wealth, happiness, health or peace. He did promise trials and tribulations for His name sake. Is His offer of everlasting life enough to spur you to seek Him with all your heart, soul, mind and strength?

Holy Father, examine my heart, that there be no falsehood found within me. Let Your promise of everlasting life be enough for me, no matter what it is I must endure for Your name’s sake. Help me to labor diligently for that food which leads to a home with You in heaven.
